Dangers of Dog Shampoo

In Dog Personalities, Homemade Dog Treats, Our Blog

There are many things to consider when you use dog shampoo, the skin is the largest organ. Anything that you put on the dog’s coat and skin can be absorbed into the body. Thus, do not use shampoos that can be toxic to your dog.

The labels used by shampoos can be deceiving, there are ingredients that can cause mild skin irritations to severe health problems. We cannot validate the products easily with their claims, we all know businesses market their products in order to boost their sales.

If by any chance your dog shampoo contains any of these listed ingredients, do not use them on your dogs.

Artificial fragrance: Synthetic fragrance can be associated with the development of cancers.

Phthalates: When an artificial fragrance is present, phthalates too. It binds the fragrance with the other ingredients of the shampoo. If you do not know, phthalates can disrupt the dog’s hormone.

Artificial colors: This is not pure chemicals, however, these byproducts can cause organ damage, birth defects, allergic reactions, and cancer to the dog.

Formaldehyde preservatives: We all know that formaldehyde has its feedback, and has reformulated with a slow releasing compound. However, its effects are still there. It can cause itching, burning, blistering, and scaling of the skin.

Isothiazolinone preservatives: It contains methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone, which can cause allergic reactions to the dog. Methylisothiazolinone is also known to be a neurotoxin.

Propylene glycol: This ingredient is used for humectants, solvent, and conditioner. It can cause toxicity to the immune system, reproductive system, and skin.

Polyethylene glycol: This ingredient is also a humectant that can moisturize the skin. As it can enhance the penetration, it can carry chemicals to cross via the skin and into the bloodstream.

Mineral oil: It is a skin moisturizer that can help protect its barrier. However, it prevents the dog’s skin from releasing its natural oils and eliminate toxins.

Sodium benzoate preservative: This can be a cancer-causing ingredient that is highly associated with leukemia and blood disorders. However, it can be considered safe it is not combined with citric acid and ascorbic acid.

SD Alcohol 40: This ingredient is used to dry the skin and hair oils, and can enhance the skin absorption. Thus, when used, toxic ingredients can easily enter the skin.

Cocamide-MEA: A surfactant that contains a high value of nitrosamines, it can cause developmental toxicity, organ toxicity, and cancer.

Sodium lauryl sulfate: It is an emulsifier, a detergent, and a surfactant. It can irritate the skin of the dog. It can cause systemic toxicity when inhaled. It contains ethoxylation which is a great contributor to the environmental pollution.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate: A cleaning agent that can be contaminated with carcinogens which can lead to immunotoxin, allergen, and developmental toxicity.

We put too much trust in the manufacturers for the grooming products of our dogs, yet there are no regulations that can question their standards invalidating the purity of their ingredients and verify their natural claims.

Thus, use those certified organic dog grooming products. Their ingredients are annually reviewed, and it can be verified that there are no GMO ingredients, no herbicides, pesticides and artificial fragrance and colors.
